Cosmetic Surgery

What motivates someone to seek cosmetic surgery?

Most people who seek cosmetic surgery do so because they are self-conscious about some aspect of their appearance and they want to feel better about themselves by have it corrected or changed. Only a small minority of people seek cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons-such as to please someone else-or because they have a psychological problem.

What are the results most people get from cosmetic surgery?

Those who obtain surgery from a board certified plastic surgeon are generally happy with the end results. However, the decision to undertake cosmetic surgery should never be undertaken lightly. Recovery almost always takes longer and the pain is often more than anticipated.

If I want cosmetic surgery, why should I see a psychologist?

When a plastic surgeon has questions about the appropriateness of a candidate for surgery, he or she may refer the patient to a psychologist for evaluation. Sometimes a prospective patient experiences anxiety about making the decision whether to proceed, and a psychologist may be able to help. A psychologist can also help a patient cope with a negative, though usually transitory, impact on body image that cosmetic surgery can have. Depression after surgery is not unusual. If the depression lasts more than a few weeks, or if the patient is having difficulty coming to terms with his or her appearance after surgery, seeing a qualified psychologist who is experienced in treating such issues can help.
